Hello from Wendy
Hi! I am Wendy Millgate-Stuart, editor and founder of Wendy & Words and Professional Member of the Institute of Professional Editors.
I'm a dedicated, personal editor who works closely with you to communicate your message clearly, confidently and in your own voice.
My editing career spans over 16 years, with over 65 publications edited. I offer a range of editing services for non-fiction, including substantive editing, copyediting and proofreading, as well as copyediting and proofreading for fiction.
My Story
I have always loved working with words. As a child, I played 'secretary' with my notebook and pens, pretending to take dictation. English was my best subject at school, and my dad gave me my first typewriter at 12. One of my early essays was even published in the local newspaper—a proud moment that sparked a lifelong love of writing.
Before founding Wendy & Words, I worked in secretarial, marketing, and copywriting roles across the health and wellness industries, education sector, and non-profit organisations. I’m naturally drawn to projects that aim to make a positive contribution in the world.
My life experiences have been varied and, at times, unconventional—including time spent living in Australia overseas in a high-control community in my younger years. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for different perspectives and a strong sense of empathy, both of which inform my work as an editor.
For two years, I was editor of a Brisbane Community & Lifestyle Magazine, where I combined my passion for words with my love of community. I have also worked as a contracting editor with Author Support Services.
Clients often tell me I have a knack for capturing their voice. I believe this comes from my ability to listen deeply and step into another person’s perspective. Editing, for me, is not just about words—it’s about understanding the person behind them.
I see writing as a powerful responsibility. Words can uplift, connect and create change. My role is to support writers in expressing their ideas clearly and authentically, with care, respec, and thoughtful guidance.
There are many ideas and perspectives in the world, each contributing to a bigger picture. I’m here to help bring those voices to life—one word at a time.
